Tony Cowlishaw –who is a Professional Associate of the SAA
and resident artist of English Watercolours demonstrates his work
and is regularly invited to give workshops at exhibitions, art
societies and clubs throughout England.
The demonstration generally lasts about 2 hours. The watercolour
is painted in a vertical standing position on an easel and is illuminated
with a natural light source from above. A sound system is also
available for use when giving the demonstration to larger groups.
The workshop takes on a different format. Working with a group
of up to 20 people, a completed painting is produced as the subject
of the workshop together with a foundation drawing to outline the
main composition of the subject. These are both placed at the front
of the class. A handout and a coloured reproduction of the subject
is made available to all participants in the group for use a reference
material. Tony will start to draw and paint the subject at the
front of the class, stopping at regular stages to go around and
discuss each individuals work with them and guide them as appropriate
- until the painting is completed.
The workshop usually takes around 4 hours, usually 2 hours in
the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon with a break for lunch.
This arrangement is quite flexible and can be done in two separate
sessions.
